Hero lock refers to the five heroes that will never spawn on round 1, as long as there are less than 3 heroes on the field – none of the five hero lock units will spawn.

What are they used for?
Hero lock makes the funneling strat viable with the help of Insignia Relic.
What is Insignia Relic and where to get it?
The Insignia relic increases damage if fewer heroes are on the field. The fewer heroes you control, the higher your damage output. You can farm the Insignia Relic on Corruption level 5.
What is the Funnelling Strategy?
This involves upgrading only one hero to the highest tier/star and selling all other units. That means you can focus all the equipment and upgrade books on that single hero. Pair that with tier-4 Insignia Relic and Blacksmith 15/Hero 10 Altars, and you get a Tier 7(Purple Star) unit with three tier-4 King God equipment, which can solo most bosses in the game.
